Things Not to Miss About Vancouver

Friday, January 25, 2013
And of course, there are always things that you won't miss about the place you're leaving.

- Translink delays and countless break downs (I will, however, miss their social media presence)
- Grey days when you can't tell the time of day
- The Yaletown scene
- Having so many hills (riding your bike or walking gets so tiring!)
- Vancouver's complete lack of snow preparedness
- Driving along: West Georgia, South Granville, Denman, Broadway, 41st, Robson
- Having simultaneous construction on all major routes from Burnaby to downtown
- Donnelly bars (same bar, different name)
- Always having to carry an umbrella because it could rain at a moment's notice
- Getting bombarded by people handing out the dailies and charity canvassers at/around Burrard Station
- $40 cab rides to Burnaby
- Trying to just find a cab
- Bandwagoners - from the Canucks to the Waldorf, Vancouverites love a cause, even if they have to make one up
- Archaic liquor laws

What are some thing in Vancouver that you wouldn't miss?

WTF? and Whine Wednesday

February 10th. 2 days. Only 2 days until the Olympics. I can't believe it. I remember the day the announcement was made.

7 years later...this is it. It's here.

It's disappointing to see so many people that are against the Olympics. I would be interested to know the statistics of how many other previous host cities had huge anti-Olympic groups. It's not something they often show...but then again, Vancouverites love a good protest. Sure, free speech and all that jazz, but really? Is our love of protesting something to be proud of? Is that what we want to be known for?

Things have a time and place. The Olympics are upon us. Is now really the time to be protesting them? Is "having your voice heard" really going to stop things from happening at this stage? No. So sit back and enjoy the show.

I see protesters, in situations like this, as being selfish. They want their voices heard and they do asinine things to get their points across. They forfeit any bit of respect they have for others, acting out as immature teenagers. If the roles were reversed, I'd bet money that the protesters would be the first to complain. Ok, so maybe protesters are miserable people who just want to have something to complain about. Let's make that assumption.

Well, I have news for you, protesters. The Olympics aren't about you! They're about sport. They're about the athletes. In fact, Pierre de Coubertin (founder of the IOC) believed that,

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

(The athlete's all know that it's about winning. Haha.)

But seriously. Think about it. The Olympics are for the athletes. Their sport is their job, it's the only thing they know. They do it because it's their passion, because in Canada, unless you have heaps of sponsors, it's definitely not about the money. These are the people who are probably the most patriotic of all. they make countless sacrifices day in and day out for their sport but also for their country.

Canada House - Rio 2007

Imagine if you will the feeling, the pride, of being able to compete against the world's best athletes, to hear your anthem played while the world is watching. It is these moments that make every sacrifice you have ever made, worth it.

So please, don't be shocked that I'm pro-Olympics. It's not about you, it's about the athletes.

Let's celebrate them.

Ok, I've addressed this subject before and I feel like I need to address it again.

You may or may not have seen my tweets on this topic over the past couple days, but, let me join the masses in saying:

Heidi Montag, what the hell were you thinking?

I'm sure we all thought she was a little nutty when, back in 2007, she went under the knife and got a nose job and breast implants. But now? After undergoing an astonishing 10 procedures in 1 day, I'd say she's full fledged looney toons.

What procedures did she get? Allow me to enlighten you:

1) mini brow lift
2) botox in forhead and frown area
3) nose job realignment
4) chin reduction
5) neck liposuction
6) ears pinned back
7) breast augmentation revision
8) liposuction on waist, hips and inner and outer thigh
9) fat injections in cheeks, nasolabial folds and lips
10) butt augmentation

And just to clarify, Heidi is 23. Not 63, like some of the procedures may hint at. I mean, neck lipo?! Mid-body lipo? Butt augmentation? Botox?! Give me a break.

Oh, and just so you all know, Heidi still maintains that inner beauty is the most important. And the thing that really pisses me off about the entire thing? She doesn't believe that her actions will have a negative effect on young people. Heidi claims that she does it because of the industry she's in. That's a load of crap. What a cop out. I would have been a lot more satisfied if she had said, "I'm very insecure about my looks and getting this done makes me feel better about myself." It may not be the best answer because, well, let's face it, the bottom line is that she had surgery, but at least it's honest.

Who knows, maybe one day she'll see the error of her ways and wish that she hadn't gone through with it. Or maybe she'll just become more and more delusional. I'm gonna go with the latter.

Let's get a psych team up in here!

But seriously, parents, sisters, cousins, friends, let's make sure that the girls in our lives have positive self images! Lead by example!

What ever happened to common decency?

There once was a time when it was common to hear people being polite to one another. An "Excuse Me" here, a "Please" there. It was great because you enjoying doing simple things for others, like holding the door open, because it was appreciated.

NOT NOW!

These days you're lucky if you get a Thank You for holding the door open for someone. Sometimes even a smile will suffice. But, I would venture that about 80% of people magically "forget" their manners or are just plain rude.

The madness has to stop! Let's be honest here, how much are you putting yourself out to be polite? Is it that hard to say Please, Thank You, and Excuse Me?

For 2010, let's all try to make a conscious effort to be more polite. It's not hard and doesn't require any time at all.

Today's Whine Wednesday also coincides with Fashion Smashion.

While trolling around online for things that I can't buy (why do we insist on torturing ourselves?), I came across 2 beauties.

The first isn't too surprising considering where I found it, but the mere fact that it exists is purely mind boggling. I've been scouring Ebay lately for vintage pieces. I already got a couple, one perfect for the holiday season, the other to be saved for summer. But I digress, let's cut to the chase.

What are these? It's like a Grandma's craft room vomited all over them. They're a DIY project gone awry! Who would wear these? What purpose do they serve? My mind is so boggled by these pants that I can't even begin to answer these questions!

And these.

Can you even believe that these pants are from Topshop?? And to top it off, they're silk! Topshop is a UK company and anyone who's been to the UK knows how much rain they get (it's like here), how are silk pants even worth having? Did a clown design these pants? Did MC Hammer try to update his look? I just don't get it.

Global Grind!!

The Haus of Hybrid was quoted on Global Grind - The World According to Hip Hop, and I couldn't have been more stoked.

It was my piece on Steph Pratt's plastic surgery. And while it was a rant of sorts (because she looks totally ridiculous), it's also an important subject.

Young women these days have such distorted views of beauty. They think that they need to be stick thin and have the perfect everything. That's not the case, at all. Unfortunately, the industry that we all love promotes this image. But the biggest culprit is Hollywood, obviously. If Steph Pratt wasn't on TV, there would be no way that she would have even thought about getting plastic surgery. But because she is, she felt pressured by everyone around her, probably indirectly, to go under the knife. There is no reason that anyone that age (what, 22?) should ever get plastic surgery, unless it's for medical reasons. Starting young like that just creates more and more problems and before you know it, you'll have a forehead like Vanessa Williams or Nicole Kidman.

As a community, promoting a healthier image is something that we need to advocate. Start at the grassroots level. Make our voices heard through little things, like writing a letter to Glamour Magazine, telling them you loved a certain model in their pages.

Happy Weekend All. Happy Friday the 13th!

WTF? and Whine Wednesday

Wednesday, November 4, 2009
I haven't done a WTF? Wednesday in awhile, mostly because there haven't been many things that I have found so irritating that I need to vent about them. Or, I've found things to drive me crazy but they would have been far too difficult to write about. But this one came easy...

Top 10 Things That Make Gossip Girl Suck (This Season)

10) Relationship longevity. What's the point of introducing a character (like Bree) and have them leave within 3 episodes? Especially in Bree's case when you try to develop a storyline and end it in 1 episode.

9) Letting Michelle Trachtenberg sign a contract for Mercy. Sure, Georgina was a bit psycho this season, but the girl makes for good TV.

8) Scott. I can't stand him. He freaks me out.

7) Dan. I had hope for him in the first episode when he was a jerk and got everyone to stay at Georgina's rooftop party rather than going to Blair's saketini party. (Who doesn't want saketinis?? Especially free saketinis. Pretentious or not, college students love free.) But it's been downhill since.

6) The lack of Blair's original followers. They were hilariously awesome.

5) Blair's new followers. They don't even have names. Or lines. Or really serve any purpose whatsoever.

4) The lack of Nelly Yuki.

3) The lack of good storyline for Vanessa. She's pretty and has potential. But stop making her waffle from bad to good and vice versa. Plus her hair is bad. Quasi-dreadlocks? No thanks.

2) Letting them graduate. I understand that people age, but did you ever see Saved by the Bell?? Once it went to College Years, it was bad news. Same with The OC. High school drama is where it's at. Has there ever been a show about kids starting college and how they deal with drama?

1) The show is called Gossip Girl. Where is GG? Aside from the occasional voice over, she's nowhere to be found. Didn't GG say that she would be following them to college? If that's the case, then what's up?! I want the simultaneous texts!

Honourable mention goes to Nate and his lack of storyline.

What else would you add?

The MTV VMAs were a couple weeks ago. I didn't watch them - I had forgotten that they were even on. And while I didn't get to watch Kanye diss Taylor Swift live, the silver lining is that I didn't have to watch any of the boring parts...namely anything that has to do with the actual awards. Because really, I don't care about the awards. I want to see what people are wearing and the performances (Lady GaGa - WOW!). The rest? Doesn't matter to me because I don't usually agree anyway. Like Beyonce, I absolutely cannot stand her. I liked her in Destiny's Child, but solo, I have no time for her. And the House of Dereon? Are we trying to make clothes that girls from the deep south that live on the "wrong side of the tracks" will wear? Because Momma Tina is successful in that. But I digress.
In the days that followed, I came across a picture that actually blew my mind. I had to literally, pick up pieces of grey matter from my cubicle.

Not so long ago, Stephanie Pratt was a cute girl. Although she comes across as a shit-disturber and an airhead on The Hills, you can't deny that she was cute. She was very girl-next-door...almost wholesome looking.

But at the VMAs, Stephanie Pratt graced the world with a, well, let's call it a new look....

I will openly admit that I think her new nose is great! It's a nice nose! I don't think it was particularly necessary, but what do I know? It's not something I'd get for myself, but on her, it looks good (and identical to Heidi's). But her lips. Did we fast-forward a month and Steph's wearing an Aubrey O'Day mask for Hallowe'en? It looks like she came straight from getting her Restylane injections - I've actually seen pictures of her since and her lips have deflated a bit, but are still borderline ridiculous. I mean, is she smiling in this picture or are her lips just too big that that's how they're supposed to be? It doesn't help her cause that the lashes she's wearing are way too heavy for her eyes and are weighing down her lids!

What I don't understand is this obsession that young women (particularly Hollywood) have with plastic surgery! Getting a procedure because you need it (Ashley Tisdale's nose) is one thing, but because you want to further your career (Megan Fox, Heidi Montag) is another. Girls like the latter two are virtually only famous because they exploit themselves and their bodies. What real talent do either of them have?

Yesterday, President Obama gave a speech to students.

Harmless right?

Apparently not. The GOP is out of control. Of the speech, "Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer accused Obama last week of trying to 'indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda'" (CNN, 2009). It's a speech to kids. Kids who can't even vote. And unless they're older than 15, it's unlikely that they even know what being socialist means. Greer was jumping the gun with his statement, since it was made before the topic of the speech was even released. Upon finding out what it was, he basically told the media that it was an acceptable topic and that his children would be watching (CNN, 2009).

What further irks me about this is that parents were outraged at the thought of Obama speaking to children. How dare he?! In fact, according to CNN (2009), one woman was actually quoted as saying, "Thinking about my kids in school having to listen to that just really upsets me. I'm an American. They are Americans, and I don't feel that's OK. I feel very scared to be in this country with our leadership right now." Seriously?! You're scared to be in this country? Because this President is trying to create positive relations internationally? How did she feel beforehand when Bush was President? Safe? How are citizens supposed to feel safe when their leader is out poking his nose in places it doesn't belong, aggravating people that he shouldn't be? Is that safe? For God's sake, it's a speech to children. And do you know what it was about?

The importance of staying in school and working hard to get an education.

Quick! Hide your children!

I suppose it's possible that the initial speech may have acted as some sort of political platform. I don't agree with that; it's not a situation that children need to be involved in. But I definitely feel that it is part of a President's responsibility to reach out to children, to inspire them and to engage them. The best thing about Obama's speech is that he knows his target audience. He references JK Rowling and Michael Jordan, illustrating how their failures lead to their eventual success. He emphasizes the importance of getting away from playing Xbox and doing homework instead. And I buy it, because he's probably played Xbox and read Harry Potter.

So what's the big deal, GOP? You let Bush talk to your kids, and he can barely formulate a sentence. But when a wonderfully well-spoken, educated man wants to speak to your children, just because he doesn't come from the same Red State background, you're all up in arms? No wonder your country can't build bipartisanship.

Can't wait to hear what they have to say tomorrow after tonight's speech to the joint session of Congress.

Transcript for Obama's speech can be found here.

Did anyone read Monday's 24Hours? Did you see the 'Feedback' section, where people can write in with comments? I sure did.

David Mann from Vancouver, you sir, are an ass.

He writes:

Pregnancy is a choice. I do not believe I have to give up my seat on the bus or SkyTrain for a pregnant woman. One has to realize at times having a baby and having children is going to be tough. This is one of those. Give up my seat for the elderly and disabled? Of course. For someone who chooses to have a baby? Not likely.

Seriously? I can only imagine how much hate-mail this man is receiving.

Mr. Mann's statement brings a couple thoughts to my head:

1) What would his Mother say to him? I mean, she obviously chose to get pregnant and have this abomination of an individual. How would he feel if his Mother had been treated this way? I would expect him to be outraged. But I suppose it's also possible that he's a terrible human being and would make his own Mother stand on the SkyTrain...on one foot and not holding on to a handrail.

2) Is he pro-choice or pro-life? Not that it matters. But in MY opinion, being pro-choice means that you get to make the best choice for yourself, be it keep the baby, give the baby up for adoption, or abort it. It's not as transparent as people make it out to be. (End of debate.)

Does Mr. Mann's statement make your blood boil like it does mine? Or am I just overreacting?

WTF? and Whine Wednesdays

Wednesday, August 26, 2009
On Wednesdays you can look forward to me venting about the crazy things that I'm fortunate enough to witness throughout the week. Most of the things I rant about here will be elaborated versions of the things I tweet about. So please, feel free to add your own WTF? and Rants in the comments section, or feel free to send them to me.

Crocs

Last week, I realized that the Crocs store had finally opened on Robson St. First off, why are they called Crocs? They don't resemble crocodiles. Or any other reptile for that matter. Second, how is it that people can look at them and say, "Now these, these I can wear with EVERYTHING!" Wrong. You can't. I will forgive you if you wear them in the garden, to take out the trash, or pretty much so that you aren't caught dead in them in public. But to wear them as actual shoes? To the store? To the mall? A restaurant? No. That is where I draw the line. I don't care if they're comfortable, they're ugly. And you look like a moron. To all you UGG haters, there is something worse. Crocs.

The One Handed Glove Man

There is this man that I see on the skytrain almost every morning. He wears one black glove. To protect his hand from germs, obvs. I have some issues with this: 1) it's not one of those gloves that the Asian women wear to drive, it's a glove. A winter, woolen glove. It's summer. Hottest one we've had, and this man is wearing a winter glove. And only one. 2) Why just one glove? Why not two? 3) They have this thing called hand sanitizer. I think that it might get rid of 99.9% of germs from such places like public transit. 4) What happens if you find yourself in a situation where you can't use the hand that the glove is on? Do you switch? Or are you the jerk who doesn't hold on and relies on other people to hold you up?

Women Who Wear Sneakers to Work

Ok. I see this way, way, WAY too often. It is seriously going to make me blind. My brain actually hurts when I see it. I will get wrinkles because I cringe so hard. Why is it that women (mostly older, but I've also seen younger) insist on wearing running shoes with not only dress pants, but also with dresses/skirts and nylons or dresses/skirts and nylons with socks. I can totally understand if you're going to go run a marathon in those clothes. In fact, I'd like to see it. What's the point? Going for a run at lunch? Carry your running shoes in an eco-friendly bag. Leave them at work and just bring a new pair of socks. For the love of God, wear them on your hands (like gloves), just stop wearing them with your work clothes! You look stupid. But my favourite, are the women who change into said shoes to go get lunch. If the shoes you wear at work are not comfortable enough to walk a block or so to get lunch and you would rather put on your ratty, smelly sneakers, then maybe you need new shoes. They're called flats and they're quite comfortable.
